How much time do you work: Full Time
Do you have a job outside the home?
No
How did you decide on your work-at-home job or business?
I got tired of the hostile
corporate world and the constant insecurity. I wanted more control over my life,
too.
What steps did you take to start your business?
Research happened
over a three year period. Viewed hundreds of plans and tried a
few things that looked good. Dumped any of our mistakes and kept
on looking because networking is a good business model. Crunched
numbers on a lot of compensation plans and found that over half
of the mlm companies offer inferior pay and real steep
requirements. We walked away from many offers.
Never settle for cheap because your time is worth something. A
few people in our industry hate the fact that I am so vocal
about compensation. Some protest by saying: "Compensation
plans don't matter." If I were to make a remark like that,
I would deserve not to be trusted. It's your life and time and
money. Use it well.
At this time, I have three diverse businesses and all have been
in the portfolio for over half a year. One has been there for
nearly two years. We are pleased, settled and growing.
You need to understand what is required in order to earn money.
If you do not make a dime before you make over $50 in sales,
then consider what we discovered. Fair compensation can be found
and we found it. Avoid plans that require in excess of $200 in
purchases to qualify for a check. That's too steep. Avoid plans
that pay less than 15% bonuses and commissions.
You should not ask me the dollars I make, but you should ask the
percentage I earn. How about a range of 15-45 percent? Bring any
compensation plan to me and I will help you break it down. You
need to know what you are getting into and what to expect. It's
OK to make good money for your work.
I was building a strategy the entire time of doing research. We
did enough research on the mlm industry to know the landscape
very well.
We found that a lot of people did not support their new recruits
very well with training. We decided to be different and we have
a proprietary training program that also uses materials by other
authors. We also made sure to get aligned with good upline
mentors in our businesses. Finally, we joined in league with
other mentors and coaches to empower our people even more.
We like to keep things simple. We teach our people to do the
same.
Some people fail in this industry. Our failure rate is about the
same as business in general. Failure happens when people are
unprepared and/or make bad decisions. We can help you get
prepared. We can steer you away from bad decisions.
If there has been anybody who has been there and done that, we
are it. So, we can help you get a strong and stable start.
Having your own business can be a very difficult challenge and
pose a real learning curve. Therefore, be prepared to spend six
months in your new business and do a lot of learning.
Do you have a business plan? Yes
Do you have a marketing plan? Yes
How do you market your business?
To market our business, we use
the Internet, face to face, telephone, email; we do it all in order to
communicate. Yes, we use scripts and outlines. We use color brochures, flyers
and promotions. This link goes to our FREE sample product ~ http://www.geocities.com/thebigkids/Product_LFI/BodyBal.html
We only make this offer to
prospective business partners. We want them to use the product before they start
making decisions. It works great.
What were your start-up costs?
Start up costs
less were than $500 and this was money on hand. Our ongoing
monthly costs do not ever exceed more than $200 and this is
decreasing, as we grow.
We tell people to make a $300 minimum commitment over the first
six months while we train them. We steer people away from making
too much of a commitment.
How long did it take to cover your expenses?
We brought one project into
positive cash in less than 60 days. Others could take up to six months. Only one
of our businesses is behind schedule and that is our fault because we were not
attentive.
How long was it before you could decrease or quit your "regular"
job?
I had a sideline contract for a
year and a half to help us float. The wife works at a good paying job and she is
a willing partner in this venture.
How do you keep focused working at home?
Sometimes I actually slack off,
but it doesn't take long to get back on track. The main work is to stay in touch
with people. The nature of networking is to communicate with people. There are
times you get tired, but just take a rest for a day or so and get back at it
with a fresh perspective.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking of starting a similar
business?
Get ready to work. Realize that
you start by working a lot to make a little. With steady efforts, you begin to
make more and more and work less and less.
Be prepared to improve yourself, your thinking and your skills. There are many
resources we can share with you.
