How I do it...
Every now and then I get an email that asks how I make money from home. Some people think this website and newsletter are how I make my living, but in fact I have several income streams. I still telecommute part-time (as needed) for an adoption agency.  While this job does require me to leave home sometimes, getting out is a good thing and I like the idea of using the college and graduate school education that took me ten years to pay off.

I do make money from WAHS through affiliate programs and advertising. Occasionally I sell information products on working at home as well. Finally I have a home business although I haven't been nearly as good at keeping up with it as I pursue my writing.  Along with the book I have with Adam's Media, I'm looking to write articles for mainstream magazines.

Before WAHS and other income streams related to teaching about working at home, I worked at home in sales, real estate, and online as a writer/researcher.

Incidently, I do have one job that I HAVE to commute to and that is as a fitness instructor. I don't mind it though as its only an hour or two a week and I get paid to exercise...which is the only way to exercise as far as I'm concerned.

Today, work-at-home opportunities are far greater and easier than when I started in the early 1990's. The key is to educate yourself on working at home so that you can focus on the read deals and avoid scams. Further, you need to tap into skills, experiences, talents or interests that you have. Don't hit the Internet looking for some sign-up-today-get-rich-tomorrow program. They don't exist.  Finally, recognize that it takes time.  Creating a work-at-home career is no different than careers out in the traditional world. You can't just sign up for a job at the mall, neither can you from home. Be diligent and never give up, and you can work at home.

How to Use WAHS Jobs and News: On occasion I get an email from someone who can't find the jobs posted in this newsletter, so I thought I'd give a quick overview on how to use the ezine.  In the section above this one, you'll find the contents of this week's ezine. Each feature now has a link so you can easily find the information you are looking for.  Each feature (Notes From Leslie, Tidbits, Jobs, etc) is separated by a color divider which the section contents indicated in the divider. For example, if you scroll down you'll find a blue divider that says, "Tips, Tidbits and Inspiration". Below that section you'll find a green divider that says "Work At Home Jobs".

I also want to point out that the only jobs (employment) listed in this ezine are listed in the Job section.  Any other work-at-home opportunities you come across will be affiliate programs, home businesses or work-at-home resources. So if you are hear solely for the jobs, you'll want to stick to the Work-At-Home Job feature.

Quick note on ads... I just want to remind readers that Work-At-Home Success  does accept advertising. Every attempt is made to check ads to make sure they offer legitimate opportunities. I have refunded or refused ads in the past that were found to be suspect. The site also feeds ads from Google Adsense. I do try to screen ads run through this service and block the scams; however, new ads are added all the time and they rotate making it difficult to always find the duds. If you find an ad that is questionable, please email me so I can remove it ASAP. Also, while WAHS runs ads, that doesn't mean it endorses the product or service offered. To learn more about WAHS's policies, visit WAHS Disclaimer Statement or see special notes below.

Eight Tips To Help You Choose An Idea For Your Website

By Tim Roberts

Running a website can be enjoyable and profitable at the same time. You may have the entrepreneurial drive to start your own business online but struggle with coming up with an idea for your site. Here are some proven tips to help choose an idea:

1. Make a huge list of topics that interest you and choose the area that you have the most passion. When you are passionate about a subject, it is more enjoyable to build and update your website. Additionally, your content will sound more personal and interesting when you write with enthusiasm. Many successful website owners claim it was there passion for the subject that made their site successful. Look for interests by considering your hobbies, job skills, topics of interest in newspapers, favorite television shows, products that you personally buy, new trends or fads, or anything else you find interesting.

2. Take a popular subject (that interests you) and come up with a unique twist that separates your site from the other sites. You could make tutorials, update visitors on the latest news on the subject, review new products, compare prices between existing products, have a forum, create a blog with your own unique perspective, write your own articles, and more.

3. Find a popular website and add something additional that makes the site even better. For example, the creator of Craigslist took the model of paid classified ads and made them free. The founder of Digg was a Slashdot user, but felt users should be able to approve submitted links instead of just editors. While visiting your favorite sites, try to think of features that would make that site better.

4. Think of something you’re good at and build a site based on it. If you’re funny, then you could create a humor site. If you are a good cook, then post videos of preparing specific meals. If you give good advice, then create an advice site on relationships, friendships, managing money, or whatever area you feel skilled. People are constantly looking for unique and fresh information on the web, which you may be able to offer them.

5. Develop your own product to sell. Maybe you’ve had a great idea for a new product and just haven’t taken any action yet. The web is a great place to market products to interested buyers. You could advertise your product, for example, using Google adwords or on other related sites on your subject. For ideas on products, one great place is to check out forums and see what problems people face in this area and then develop a solution.

6. Make a blog on yourself. Maybe you live an interesting lifestyle and think website visitors would find your life equally as interesting. If you’re not shy, then share your life experiences or inner thoughts. Blogs also allow visitors to comment on your posts so you may actually learn something from your blog as well.

7. Take a popular subject of interest and choose a niche. Having a focus on your site can help prevent feeling overwhelmed about what to write. A niche website can also stand out from general topic websites and result in targeted visitors who will be more interested in your content.

8. Have paper and a pen handy during the day to jot down ideas that come to mind. If you’re like me, I have actually come up with ideas in the past but soon forgot about them. These ideas can come to you while going about your day without even consciously trying to choose a topic. It’s best to write them down as soon as possible.

Try out these tips and you should be well on your way to building your new site!

Marketing Tips

Making Money With Workshops And Seminars

By Patrick Schwerdtfeger

One of the best ways to build your business is to hold workshops and seminars. There are two primary benefits. First, you position yourself as an expert in your field. You’re the one in front of the room and people attending these events automatically give a certain amount of credibility to the person putting on the class. Second, you can make money in the process. This article will look at three ways you can cash in on workshops and seminars.

The first and most obvious way to make money doing workshops and seminars is to charge a registration fee. In many cases, if you’re doing the seminar through an Adult Education program, you’ll only get a certain percentage of the registration dues. The average is 50% but there are other programs that pay their instructors an hourly wage and in those cases, you won’t benefit at all from a good turnout.

You can also hold workshops at tradeshows and conferences. In those cases, there usually aren’t any dues to speak of. Attendees pay a lump sum to attend the tradeshow or conference and then have access to all the educational sessions being provided. Speakers normally do not get paid for such engagements but established industry gurus are often paid to headline these events.

Lastly, you can book speaking engagements at community organizations like the Rotary or Kiwanis Clubs. You won’t get paid for these events either but it’s a great way to get in front of people. Besides, you can always position yourself for the other two ways of making money.

The second money-making strategy is to use the speaking opportunity to position yourself for consulting contracts or jobs. Let’s look at a couple examples. If you’re a Real Estate Agent offering a program about buying your first home, you could easily get new clients in the process. Likewise, if you’re a Marketing Consultant, you could end up with consulting jobs from people who heard you speak. In either case, you make money as a direct result of the speaking engagement.

The third way to make money is to sell products. In fact, information products have become the mainstay of the public speaking circuits. We’re talking about books, CDs, DVDs and manuals, all designed to train you to achieve one thing or another. The beauty of these products is that they cost almost nothing to produce but they can be sold for hundreds of dollars. Speakers all over the world are speaking for free as long as they have an opportunity to sell their products at the back of the room.

There’s an added dimension to this last strategy. A lot of event organizers are aware of the money being made on information products and request a percentage of the revenue in exchange for the speaking opportunity. These arrangements vary widely but can run as high as 60% for organizations with proven track records for attracting attendees. In fact, some organizations won’t even invite you to speak unless you have products to sell and revenue to share.

As you can see, there are different ways to make money speaking in front of people. The three primary categories are registration dues, consulting jobs and product sales. All three should be considered when evaluating a speaking opportunity. Done properly, the combination of all three can make workshops and seminars a lucrative marketing exercise.
