How to Use WAHS Jobs and News: On occasion I get an email from someone who can't find the jobs posted in this newsletter, so I thought I'd give a quick overview on how to use the ezine.  In the section above this one, you'll find the contents of this week's ezine. Each feature now has a link so you can easily find the information you are looking for.  Each feature (Notes From Leslie, Tidbits, Jobs, etc) is separated by a color divider which the section contents indicated in the divider. For example, if you scroll down you'll find a blue divider that says, "Tips, Tidbits and Inspiration". Below that section you'll find a green divider that says "Work At Home Jobs".

I also want to point out that the only jobs (employment) listed in this ezine are listed in the Job section.  Any other work-at-home opportunities you come across will be affiliate programs, home businesses or work-at-home resources. So if you are hear solely for the jobs, you'll want to stick to the Work-At-Home Job feature.

Quick note on ads... I just want to remind readers that Work-At-Home Success  does accept advertising. Every attempt is made to check ads to make sure they offer legitimate opportunities. I have refunded or refused ads in the past that were found to be suspect. The site also feeds ads from Google Adsense. I do try to screen ads run through this service and block the scams; however, new ads are added all the time and they rotate making it difficult to always find the duds. If you find an ad that is questionable, please email me so I can remove it ASAP. Also, while WAHS runs ads, that doesn't mean it endorses the product or service offered. To learn more about WAHS's policies, visit WAHS Disclaimer Statement or see special notes below.

Tax Breaks for Home Businesses by Bizymoms.com Management

We all know continued layoffs, closings, downsizing and mergers have resulted in home based businesses being grown at a phenomenal rate. However, did you know that home businesses can be great tax shelters?

Home based business people are very often focused on successfully starting the business and generating sufficient profits, initially. So it’s not until the first tax season rolls around that they realize there are deductions that can reduce gross income and thereby can reduce your tax payable.

Unfortunately failure to keep some valuable receipts or other supporting documents, results in many of them being unprepared to maximize the benefits of those eductions. Be sure to keep accurate records of all your expenses, which will later provide the basis of information needed to figure your deductions for the business use of your home. You should keep receipts, bills, cancelled checks, credit card statements, and other evidence of expenses you paid. The IRS requires you to keep these records as long as they are important for any tax law, which is usually 3 years from the date your taxes are filed.

As a home based business owner you may deduct a portion of the following business expenses, which are directly related to your house.

ü    Insurance
ü    Interest expense on the mortgage of the residence
ü    Rent, if you don't pay a mortgage
ü    Repairs
ü    Security system
ü    Utilities and services including natural gas, electricity and water
ü    Real estate taxes
ü    Depreciation, if you do depreciate your home

As you can see utilizing your home to administer your business can be highly beneficial. However this will be only possible if you qualify for such deductions. In order to qualify you must meet the IRS requirements found in IRS publication 587. Some of the guidelines derived from IRS publication are as follows;

Ø    You do not have any other permanent office location outside the home where you conduct business activities.

Ø    The specific area defined in your house as your office, must be used for business purposes only. So you cannot use it for other purposes such as family events, etc… Further, you must use the office on a regular basis to conduct administration and management activities of the business such as bookkeeping, billing of customers, ordering supplies and writing reports.

Ø    Make sure that use of any space in your business office area is associated with the business, and used as storage on a regular basis. Use the space exclusively and regularly as a place where you meet or deal with customers.

Now, for the time being let us assume that you manage to qualify for these deductions. Keep in mind that you will only be able to deduct a portion of the total expenses. Why?

The logic is simple, you don’t exactly use the whole house for your business. As a result you need to determine how much of your house is actually used for business purposes. For example let’s say you decided to start a Tax Consultation Service and you do all your work at your home office. Assume your house is 1250 sq feet and your home office is 200 sq feet. That's 16% of the total area of the house (200 sq feet / 1250 sq feet). Thus, you can deduct 16% of all the above mentioned valid expenses on your tax return. For instance if your annual rent was $30,000, you would be able to deduct 16% of it (i.e. $4800) from your taxable income.

So far we have looked at this topic from a general perspective. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you access the IRS publications noted above and go through them in detail. It includes many more exceptions and detailed requirements you need to consider before taking the home business deduction. Further, it is also advisable to get the consultation of a tax specialist in case of complicated scenarios specific to your business.

Marketing Tips

Your Advertising Dollar, Getting the Most Bang for your Buck by Tammy DePew Smith

Reaching your ideal customers with the right message, in the right place, at the right time is very important for stretching available ad dollars.  Proper marketing research, and planning, will allow you to reach your prospects wherever they happen to be and when they are in a receptive frame of mind for your product or service.  Basically, this means that you put your advertisement where your target audience can’t miss it.  Whether you sponsor a Little League Team, purchase a radio spot on a popular rock and roll station, or advertise in this family targeted magazine, you should choose the right place and time for your advertising.

Choosing just the right advertising venue to reach your targeted prospects can be tricky.  I’ve included four questions to help you evaluate your options.  Be sure that you answer “yes” to one or more of the questions.

1) Location, Location, Location!  This is true in real estate transactions, and in an effective marketing campaign.  Does the location target your best prospects?  Are your prospects mothers with young children?  Then an advertisement in a family based publication is a good investment.  Are you looking to reach individuals without health insurance?  Leave brochures and flyers in dentist’s and doctor’s offices.  Do extensive research on your target audience.  Know where your best prospects are likely to be to see your ad.

2) Is your ad reaching your potential prospect at the exact moment they are receptive to your product or service?  When would you be more receptive to an organic sleep aid, while driving down the interstate or while watching late night talk shows because you can’t fall asleep?  The point is that your prospects will require different products and services depending on the occasion.  This is sometimes called “occasion segmentation.”

3) Is the location appropriate for your company’s message?  When conducting your research for advertising options, make sure any location you choose matches the theme of your overall marketing plan.  For example, if your business sells homemade, gooey, calorie-laden brownies, then a poster in a health club might not be the best investment of your advertising dollars.  Even if the patrons of the health club match the demographics of your target audience, the message isn’t compatible with the location.

4) Is your advertisement creating community goodwill?  Some types of location advertising can do wonders for your company’s image.   Sponsoring community events,  Little League Teams, or even nature trails in a local park can boost your company’s image as a good citizen of the community.  A good example of using sponsorship as a form of advertising – a lovely playground in this area was built with the generous donations of many local businesses.  As a “thank you” the names of these businesses were engraved on plaques that are now affixed to the playground equipment.  How many individuals have read these plaques while watching their children enjoy themselves at the playground?  This type of goodwill is priceless.

By doing your research and discovering your target audience’s preferences and locations you can choose one of the above advertising choices, or a mix of several, to achieve your marketing goals, and get the most “bang for your buck.”
