Learn How Katie Seller Built a Jewelry Empire from Home
Katie Seller, is the CEO of Metal Marvels, and the voice of the Boss as F**k podcast. Metal Marvels was founded in 2012, with the goal of selling jewelry that inspires women to be fierce. She loves to inspire women to wear what they want and be themselves.
1) How did you get started working from home?
I got started working from home in 2012 because I was a year away from graduating college and fed up with upper management at my current job. I decided that I no longer wanted to answer to someone else.
2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?
I chose jewelry initially because I was living at home at the time and didn’t want to overrun my parents house with inventory. Jewelry was small enough to do that, for a little while.
3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?
I started with the basics; figuring out a name, then applying for the necessary business licenses, sources for a few items to start selling, and got an e-commerce site. It was a lot of trial and error and Googling.
4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?
My very first customer was part of my friend base actually. The simple, start with them and work your way out.
5) How do you market your business?
Currently we utilize social Media to its full extent. As well as our email list. We run ad campaigns on Facebook and Instagram. We partner with influencers. We have a great affiliate program. We make sure we’re consistent on the channels our ideal client hangs out on.
6) What does your usual day look like?
Probably not similar to a lot of others. I’m a late riser and my zone of genius is about 2:30pm and after. So I typically wake up, make breakfast (though technically lunch when it’s after 11), drink coffee, take in a podcast or two. Then I get set up in my office and ready to crush my day and to do list. The clock out time varies drastically depending on my day, my to do list and how soon they all get done but I’m known to eat a pretty late dinner on the regular.
7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
I wish I had known it wasn’t as easy as some others made it look. It wouldn’t have changed my mind at all, but I probably would have been more prepared for the craziness that is entrepreneurship.
8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?
You’ve got to be completely dedicated for quite some time or it won’t work. Make lists! To do lists work wonders for your self esteem as you’re going along. Checking things off and accomplishing them will make you feel amazing. Trust me.
