1) How did you get started working from home?
My journey started in 2011 when I left my job in higher education to stay home with my son. When I jumped back into work in 2014 it was my vision to work from home. When I launched my own company in September 2016 it was the perfect opportunity to make that happen. It’s economical, my clients don’t mind, and I really really like working in sweatpants.
2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?
It did some serious soul searching about how I can use my talents to make a difference in this world. What it all boiled down to is that I love coaching, helping people with money, life design, and I’m really good at it! I hired a business coach and the moment I realized how much I needed and wanted to be on my own I pulled the trigger and just did it!
3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?
I scheduled my first call with my business coach in September 2016. She started asking me tough questions about my current situation (I was working as a Financial Advisor for a private wealth management firm). The more she dug, the more my answers sounded a lot like I wanted to leave and create something on my own but I was scared as you know what to do it. My first step was to leave my firm which I promptly did 4 days later. After having a brief freak out, I got straight to business with branding myself as a money coach. I worked to design my services and called my first prospective client to get a meeting on the books.
4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?
My first client was a women who had been interested in working with me while I was at my firm. Once we met and she realized that my offer was coaching, she was all in. It was exactly what she wanted and needed more than a traditional financial plan.
5) How do you market your business?
I market 90% online (Facebook mainly). I utilize my YouTube Channel content to explore different topics. I am also heavily involved in my community and have achieved some great referral business.
6) What does your usual day look like?
My son is 9 and a talker! LOL, I make sure I get me time every morning before we get to the daily grind of the school hustle. I’m up at 5:00 a.m. with a cup of joe and morning meditation. After a dog walk (I think she walks me most of the time), I get my son off to school. From there, depending on the day, I’m at community meetings, coffee dates with referral partners and/or clients, or I’m at home like today working on marketing, my YouTube Channel, interviews, writing articles, or planning awesome events for clients.
7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
I wish I would have known how important it really is to hire a mentor. My entire world changed, and my business blew up once I had the right support in place.
8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?
Working from home is as equally a gift as it is a challenge. It’s perfect for the person who can stay self motivated and really values autonomy. However, working from home can be isolating. It’s important to find a support system (off line preferably) that will keep you grounded and connected. My FEMM Mentorship has been the difference between feeling like I’m on an island, to being consistently uplifted, unstuck and moving in the direction of my dreams.
