1) How did you get started working from home?
I was completing my university degree from home and found a part time freelance role at a digital agency. Following that I landed another full time role in a fully distributed digital agency. I now run my own remotely operated digital marketing agency.
2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?
My background is in public relations and I fell in love with the digital aspect. That’s when I set on the path to becoming an SEO specialist as I am today.
3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?
If you want to run a business from home a great idea is to start by working in a remote based role. It gives you the insights as to how things run, which is what I did. Find opportunities on work at home job boards.
4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?
My first remote job came from a university placement, where I continued to work as a freelancer on a part time basis.
5) How do you market your business?
Our agency gets great word of mouth, in an industry like SEO and digital marketing word of mouth is really powerful. We also use digital avenues like social media marketing and SEO.
6) What does your usual day look like?
It begins at 6am with my morning routine, between 7 and 8 am there is correspondence and planning. Throughout the day I’m involved in client activities, consultation calls, client meetings and the day usually ends around 6pm.
7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
Structure is really important when you start working from home and even more important when its a business. Ensuring you have all of your processes in place is paramount. Don’t aim for perfect in the beginning, just get it done and tweak so it fits your business best as you grow.
8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?
Working from home allows flexibility but I have seen people take advantage of that, where they end up playing catch up on work because they haven’t achieved much. Stick to a schedule that works as best you can.
