Tiffany Murphy, is the Chief Chaos Tamer at Chaos Automated, LLC. She helps small businesses strategically automate their chaos. She specializes in business planning, setting up back-end systems, email marketing campaigns and the like. She is also a wife to an awesome hubby, lifelong resident of the East Coast, world traveler, wine lover, and her favorite role of all: mommy to her munchkins.

1) How did you get started working from home?

I am an unexpected entrepreneur! I had just found out I was expecting my second child and wanted to figure out a way to stay home. I had worked in the corporate world for several years and was tired. Tired of the commute, tired of missing out on events with the kids, and just plain tired. I had tried several multi-level marketing (MLM) businesses and never made a profit prior to opening my own virtual assistant business.

2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?

I chose the virtual assistant business because of the flexibility and freedom it offered. I get to set the rules, my rates, my hours, the clients and projects I take on, and whether or not I can attend my kids school play. That is ultimately why I choose this path.

3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?

As I mentioned before, I’m an accidental entrepreneur! I told a few friends and family what I was hoping to do and everyone was extremely encouraging. I did drag my feet a bit but eventually, I came up with a business name, bought the domain, setup my website, and started to talk about being a virtual assistant to anyone who would listen.

4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?

Another happy accident! I attended a networking event with my mother and found several clients. And then they recommended their friends to me for more business.

5) How do you market your business?

Because I offer high-level business automations, the best place for me to market is on social media. I love setting up the back-end systems for small business owners and solopreneurs so they can get back to focusing on growing their business. I have a great mix of referrals and social media clients.

6) What does your usual day look like?

When you work from home, you aren’t around a lot of people except your immediate family. For me, I usually head to Orangetheory in the morning so I can interact with others and get my workout completed before the kids get up for the day. Then, when I get home, I check my emails, check-in with clients, and start any projects scheduled for that day. I carve out time to market myself on social media by posting in groups and responding to messages. Right now, I’m also mapping out a new course I’d like to create soon and have been spending a lot of time doing that after the kids go to bed *(hint hint: it’s about being a VA!)*.

7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I didn’t wait so long to really get started! I had the idea of the business back in 2015 but it wasn’t until two years later I created my website and really started marketing myself as a virtual assistant.

8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?

Don’t wait! Jump on in! There is plenty of business opportunity around for everyone. It’s fairly easy to get started. Do not worry about getting a website and doing all the things at one time or it will become overwhelming and your momentum will stall *(that’s what happened to me!). *Believe in yourself. Change your mindset and you will change your future. Best of luck to anyone out there thinking about starting their own work-from-home business!
