Advertising is the top income earner for bloggers who earn 100%of their income from their blog, according to a survey conducted by Professional Blogging For Dummies author Susan J. Getgood.
The most common sources of revenue for bloggers who make their living from their blog were:
- Advertising 75%
- Freelance Writing 58.3%
- Affiliate Commissions and Referral Fees 50%
- Consulting 25%
- Pay Per Post Opportunities 25%
- Speaking Fees 16.7%
- Other (not indicated) 8.3%
- Book or eBook Sales 8.3%
While the sample surveyed appears to be small, the results show that most bloggers who make their living through their blogs earn the majority of their income through advertising, freelance writing and affiliate commissions.
Income through advertising and affiliate commissions requires good, steady traffic, so as you build your blog, your focus should be on getting readers. Getting hired to consult, speak or to write a book also requires a having a large, loyal group of readers. So while blogging can come from a variety of sources, they all require having a fan base, which comes from marketing.
