Work-At-Home Success: How Antonella Pisani Used Her Skills at eCommerce to Form Official Coupon Code
My name is Antonella Pisani and I lead Official Coupon Code, a website which aims to provide a better customer experience for deal & coupon seekers in the USA and Canada, and also offers eCommerce consulting services. Prior to pursuing this path, I held eCommerce and digital marketing leadership roles at Fossil, JCPenney, Guitar Center and Proflowers.
1) How did you get started working from home?
In early 2016, I decided to launch my own business and knew that I would need to keep expenses low as we got off the ground. Working from home was the natural fit, but I also wanted to have the flexibility to travel anywhere in the world, so it was more important to create something that could be run remotely over being a specific “work from home” job. Last year, I worked from Antarctica, the Arctic, Bhutan, Morocco and other places, but much of my time is also spent working from my home in Denver.
2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?
My background is in all things digital, and as I mentioned, I wanted to be able to work from anywhere. Focusing on affiliate marketing was a great fit because it wouldn’t require inventory or a physical location, and could be run by a team that also works from different locations. eCommerce consulting could also be done from anywhere, including home, and would help cover expenses as my core business grows.
3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?
The first step was to get my website set up and find several partners to work with to ensure that we were providing quality content to our visitors. This took some trial and error, but I found great vendors to help get the site moving in the right direction. After that was established, I had to focus on building traffic through SEO and other marketing channels, but also needed infrastructure – proper work email address, finance software, etc.
4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?
I believe that the first order probably came from a friend or family after promoting the website as a “beta” on social media. For the consulting side, it came in through a referral from a former ad agency partner.
5) How do you market your business?
Most of my time is spent on SEO since that’s the most cost efficient vehicle, but I also share out content on social media and leverage paid search when appropriate. I’ve also issued some press releases and run a consistent stream of other tests to see what is effective and efficient. For the consulting side, I don’t actively market myself – clients have come in through word of mouth, which works well since most of my focus is on the website.
6) What does your usual day look like?
Through the course of the day, it’s a juggling act. I always start by reviewing sales figures from the previous day and answering email, but then I try to identify 2-4 things that need to get done that day. It can be anything from getting a new article written, to public relations and SEO work, to working on a new redesign, or working with a client. No two days are alike, which is what makes this fun.
7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
I spent a lot of money early on with a high end copy-writing firm, and while I really like the product they produced, I’m not sure that it yielded the value commensurate with the cost. I probably would have explored other routes if I were starting all over again.
8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?
Make sure that you take advantage of the flexibility that working from home gives you, if you operate the type of business that is location independent. My “home” can be anywhere – a cafe, a hotel room, or even an airplane. While I work from my actual home much of the time, I definitely take advantage of the freedom I have!
