Ask Leslie

Hi Leslie. I want to work at home, but I don’t have money to set up a home office. Is there a way I can still work from home? – Sam

Hi Sam,
The office store is one of my favorite places to shop, but usually, you don’t need to fully outfit a home office to get started working at home. I’m a big believer on working with you’ve got. You’ll need a computer and in most cases what you own will be enough. Some jobs ask for specific computer requirements, and those jobs might not be available to you if your computer doesn’t meet the criteria. Customer service often requires a headset, which isn’t that expensive. Some jobs might require specific software, which can be expensive. But many jobs I find don’t need any of that. As long as you can provide the tasks that the employer asks for, what’s in your home office doesn’t matter.

I do recommend setting up a permanent office in your home. It’s easier to get to work if the office is set (as opposed to clearing of the dining room table) and helps satisfy the IRS’s policy of an exclusive office.

WAHS Hall of Shame – Scam Alert

The Attorney General in North Carolina released a report on scams that are currently appearing in North Carolina. But odds are if they are NC, they are elsewhere as well. One work-at-home scam involves pitches for an online store. “Consumers who buy into the scheme usually find that selling items online is harder and than they’d thought and that their earnings aren’t what they expected. Once they’ve paid the initial fee to set up their online store they may get hit with additional fees, with some people reporting as much as $40,000 in extra charges appearing on their credit card or disappearing from their bank accounts,” says LoanSafe.org. Wow! $40,000! Who’s got that kind of money to lose? Another scam is the fake check scam where people are asked to help a business “process” payments. To learn more and protect yourself from scams, be sure to read Work-At-Home Success Scam information.
