1) How did you get started working from home?
I was working in the Public Relations department of a pro sports team at age 14. Part of my job responsibilities included calling the media in the evenings. I did that from home vs. the office. Two years later I was working for the Philadelphia Flyers, I had to handle youth hockey reporting to local media so I had a auto-answering recorder that recorded the scores of high school games that were phoned in, which I then compiled into reports to 31 media outlets. As I became college age, I worked in the mornings before class at home, and then again at night.
2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?
I think it was more the work at home blended nicely with a students hours. I had a real office but part of the job required working at night, so home was better than staying late in the office.
3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?
A phone line was installed for me. I was given education in media relations from the time I was 14 until 19 by a real industry veteran. I learned that reporters also worked “from home” or on the road, so virtual working came naturally.
4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?
I was selling an ad for my junior high school yearbook to the owner of the Philadelphia Wings. When I came back to get the ad and the money, he offered me a job stuffing tickets into envelopes. Two weeks later I was promoted to the PR department. I’ve never looked back.
5) How do you market your business?
Mostly by word of mouth, referrals and my blog, AndyAbramson.com
6) What does your usual day look like?
Morning starts around 6 or 630. Coffee, conference calls, internal team calls, client meetings, lunch and usually afternoons full of writing and planning.
7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
How much fun this would be to be able to work from anywhere, and that offices were going to one day be a thing of the past. I like the idea of working in lots of space and home was always much more space than any office.
8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?
Set your boundaries with your family.
