1) How did you get started working from home?

I began working for myself in my late teens as a professional magician.

2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?
I’ve always loved magic and have been involved for as long as I can remember.  I’ve also had a long-standing passion for peak-performance, creativity, and personal development.  Combining the two was a natural outcome of those interests.

3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?

I put together my first professional magic show in my teens, began looking for possible venues, created some simple marketing and promotional materials, and began selling myself everywhere I could.

4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?

A referral from a friend.

5) How do you market your business?

I now use a variety of direct marketing strategies, including web-based, email marketing, and a follow-up program for generating referrals and repeat business.

6) What does your usual day look like?

I spend time on lead generation projects, sending out information from incoming requests, communicating with clients about their events (writing and sending proposals, writing and sending contracts, coordinating with event facilities, etc., etc.).  On days when I’m presenting programs, I prep my materials, check routes to my job, and plan out my trip–when I need to arrive, set-up at the event, etc., etc.

7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I’d known more about marketing and how central it is to everything in my business.

8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?

Organization and focus are essential.  It’s crucial to learn to be self-motivated and not get side-tracked with unessentials.  Become an avid student of direct marketing strategies and implement them on a daily basis.  Do something every day to generate new business.
