Stephanie Caudle is a freelance publicist and also the founder of Black Girl Group, an online freelance platform that connects African American women freelance creatives to companies seeking to create innovative and engaging content for African American audiences.
1) How did you get started working from home?
I started working from home back in 2012 for a local company in the area and from there I eventually transitioned into working full time as a freelancer and start up founder based from home after being laid off of my full time job in 2016.
2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?
I chose my work at home career based on my past job experience and also based on the degree I received from North Carolina A&T State University which was Journalism and Mass Communications with a concentration in Public Relations
3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?
There are lots of ways to find work from home jobs that aren’t scams. Begin by visiting websites such as Indeed.com and for location just select remote work from home or telecommute. You will be surprised to see how many positions allow you to work form home. Even in terms of freelancing from home it’s very imperative that you type in freelance combined with remote, freelancing, work from home etc.
4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?
I got my first client from a status post someone listed on Linkedin.
5) How do you market your business?
I market my business on Linkedin and Twitter, I also do a ton of keyword research to identify what terms my key audience is searching in order to find me and I make sure I incorporate that content into my website.
6) What does your usual day look like?
No two days are the same but I generally start my day at 4:00 am (which is because I also have a 3 year old daughter who is at home with me during the day on 3 out of 5 days. Each day typically consists of me carving out at least 2 hours per client a day (I have 6)
7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
Don’t ever be afraid to market yourself and your successes. Success draws new clients.
8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?
Make sure you have a schedule. If you don’t have a schedule or a plan, plan to fail.
