1) How did you get started working from home?

I started my current business Transform Your Performance after moving to New York from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I owned a different business.

2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?

My coaching business Transform Your Performance came about as an organic combination of my previous experience as an international corporate executive, entrepreneur, holistic healing/mindset fanatic, and passionate dancer. Coaching and inspiring aspiring women leaders through my talks and workshops seemed like a natural next step based on my professional background. Later, I was invited to become a Certified Leadership Ambassador for Take The Lead Women, an organization that drives gender parity in leadership.

3)How did you get started?

I had so much to learn: Everything was new: I’d never been an entrepreneur in the U.S., and I didn’t know many people in NYC. So I went out networking and signed up for my first group coaching program to learn the basics. I incorporated and started working on my concept, which I have revised many times ever since. I also created my first website and a LinkedIn profile.

4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?

I did my first event with paying participants and I sold several individual sessions and small packages, but I got my first long-term client through LinkedIn, as unlikely as it may seem. My first client was a young dancer and choreographer from Macau, who now dances in Europe. We worked together in several different stages of her advancement.

5)How do you market your business?

It is a combination of networking, online presence, speaking (online and offline), my recent book, and cold prospecting. I am currently also working on my own app. I have close to 10,000 connections on LinkedIn, my preferred social media tool, where I occasionally publish articles. And of course I have a mailing list.

6)What does your usual day look like?

The first 30 minutes of the day are reserved for my morning routine, which always includes a visualization of the day ahead with a positive outcome.

I usually plan my day on the previous day: I look at my scheduled meetings and calls and fill in the blanks with other important tasks, such as prospecting, writing, planning.

Many evenings are filled with networking events and client phone/Skype sessions.

7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

3 things come to mind immediately:

· Outsource more, esp. tech stuff

· Get a 1:1 coach instead of investing in group coaching (so you
get what you need and not what’s defined in the program)

· Start with the end in mind

8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?

Invest in a comfortable designated work space, even if it’s a corner of a small NYC apartment. If you share your apartment with other people, set your boundaries so they respect your dedication to your work.

Be disciplined: Work according to your own plan, not according to what your email inbox dictates.
