Rob Kessler is the inventor of Million Dollar Collar, a business that makes dress shirts that look amazing. He has worked from home for several of his businesses, at least in the beginning. He has been working from home now on this company for a little over 2 years. He is joined in this venture by his partner in Madison, WI and his employee in Denver, CO.
1) How did you get started working from home?
Necessity. I like to bootstrap to minimize debt in the beginning. Working from home offers low overhead and 24-hour access for that 3AM bright idea, need to get it down.
2) How did you choose the work-at-home career you do?
I am a business owner and in order to grow the business, all profits are re-invested into the company. Having an outside office would minimize that and stunt the growth potential.
3) How did you get started (basic initial steps)?
All you need are the basics. A desk/dining room table, computer, and note paper. Don’t over think it. When you start making money, then you can spend it on making it nicer.
4) How did you get your first client or customer or job?
Our clients are all over the world, so most business initiates via email or through our website. We did a lot of outreach on LinkedIn as well. It takes 10 times as much effort as you’d think. But when you get the call that a worldwide brand wants to meet, it’s all worth it!
5) How do you market your business?
We’re in the fashion industry and there are a lot of much bigger players to compete against. We connected with YouTube fashion bloggers to get our product in front of their clients. That was very effective for us. That is followed up with Facebook ads and re-targeting ads.
6) What does your usual day look like?
The hardest part about working from home is staying motivated. I have a specific routine as if I was going to the office. Get up, shower, dress like I’m going to the office, and get to work. Break from breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and keep grinding. Minimize the distractions and put in the time.
7) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
Make lists, lots of lists. It is easy to get distracted with the dog or lunch, or the weather. With a good to do list, it is much easier to stay focused.
8) What advice would you give someone who wants to work from home?
Commit fully to working from home. It is not a vacation, it is harder work because it is harder to stay focused. No one is going to push you or make you hit your goals, you have to push yourself, so find some motivation pages or a day-by-day calendar to help keep you focused.
